EEAS 2nd Policy Briefing Session

30 Jan 2019 12.00 AM - 31 Jan 2019 12.00 AM
Brussels, Belgium

Chaired by Tomas Larsson (University of Cambridge) this second briefing session was devoted to the theme State and fate of liberalism and democracy in Southeast Asia: the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. Two presentations were made. The first by Lisandro Claudio (Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines) dealt with the subject The hegemony of Dutertismo: Lower middle-class mentalities and the erosion of liberal democracy. The second presentation, by Andreas Ufen (GIGA, Hamburg) also broached a subject of contemporary salience namely Malaysia after the 2018 elections: Stalled reforms and the Malay-Muslim challenge. Unfortunately due to serious weather-related problems in the German rail system a third planned presentation by Eugénie Mérieau (University of Göttingen, Germany) on Thailand’s dual state: Towards general elections under martial law, had to be cancelled.
