Paderon, Marissa

Marissa Maricosa A. Paderon is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of UNCTAD Virtual Institute of the Economics Department, and Director of the European Studies Program at the Ateneo de Manila University.  She was a Visiting Professor at Philipps Universitäit Marburg in 2016.  Prior to her teaching, she was a Supervising Tariff Specialist at the Philippine Tariff Commission, where she worked for almost eleven years. Her research interests include trade policy, regional integration, comparative regional economic relations of EU and Asia; and competition policy.  She is part of CRISEA’s Work Package 5 (Integration).

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded primarily to fend off the threat of the Cold War, the war in Vietnam, and the conflicts between each other.  But the central part of its creation was economic cooperation.  This paper reviews the free trade areas vis-à-vis ASEAN’s internal integration commitments, and aims to answer two questions -what exactly is ‘ASEAN centrality’ in the midst of FTAs?
